We are three weeks away from lambing. Lily and Lotus are beginning to show “baby bumps.” Now we begin watching and waiting for signs of labor. The 2:00 am barn checks can be tiring, but provide piece of mind that everyone is fine. . Waiting for the lambs to arrive is exciting but stressful. As a shepherd, you are always hopeful that delivery complications do not arise. However, over the past six years we have intervened in at least one delivery each lambing season. . You must be prepared to think quickly if a Mama shows signs of distress and needs help. If you had told me 10 years ago that I could pull a lamb, I probably would have laughed. As a sheep breeder, you must learn to assist when necessary because it may take a vet too long to reach you during a delivery. . Beginning in Mid March we keep our eyes open and watch our Mamas closely until everyone delivers. We hope that we are rewarded with a barnyard full of healthy, hopping lambs. There is nothing better than being greeted by sweet lamb faces every morning. .
