Grant’s golden mole (Eremitalpa granti) . While searching for some herpetofauna in the sand dunes of the Namib desert, I was lucky enough to have an encounter with this little guy. ——————————————————— All 21 species of golden mole are endemic to small parts of Southwestern Africa. Although similar in morphology to true moles and other mole-like families, golden moles are taxonomically distinct and adaptations such as digging claws or dense fur to repel sand are the result of convergent evolution due to the similar demands of a subterranean lifestyle. . Looking at the head, it almost seems like they don’t posses any eyes and why would they, spending the majority of their lives underground? However, eyes are present on the head but covered with fur and thus making them non-functional. . With a maximum length of 9 cm and weight of 25 g the Grant’s golden mole is the smallest of all golden mole species and is also the sole member of its genus. . In contrast to the other species of the family, Grant’s golden moles rarely build tunnels and rather “swim” through the sand. This method of moving around has earned them the rather comical title of “sand shark”. . Specialised in eating termites and invertebrates, these golden moles quite surprisingly even consume vertebrates of the same size such as legless lizards, skinks and web-footed geckos. . A range that coincides with coastal desert where human influence on habitats is limited and only local habitat alteration and fragmentation is known, suggest that this species is currently not threatened with extinction. However, the population trend as well as a precise estimate of overall numbers are still unclear and therefore make it difficult to assess the potential need of conservation efforts. . IUCN conservation status: “Least Concern” . #taiapo #goldenmole #connectwithnature #nature #wildlife #conservation

Love monkeys like this endangered Peruvian woolly monkey @ibamagov? On this World Monkey Day, you can protect this, and hundreds of other species by pledging to not keep primates as pets. Monkeys like this one face many serious threats, but in cases like this, the illegal pet trade could very well lead to the species’ undoing. In recent years, gray woolly monkeys have, unfortunately, become popular pets. Taking these monkeys from their forested home in the Amazon is often a heartbreaking process where mother monkeys are shot and killed, allowing for newly orphaned babies to be taken from the wild and sold via the pet trade. While protected areas like national parks can help to protect remaining populations and the land they depend on, the practice of illegally taking woolly monkeys out of the wild will continue to threaten their survival until the demand for monkeys as pets has been extinguished. #MonkeyDay #woollymonkey #peruvian #endangeredspecies #primate #monkey #cute #notapet #PhotoArk #savetogether
